Remodeling Brings Togetherness
By Cheri Ghan & Mary Dahm

Pat Okker and Richard Edging knew what was wrong with their home and Pat thought she had an idea to fix it. But it wasn't until they met with Kerry Bramon Remodeling and Design that the solution became as clear as the daylight that now streams through their rural Columbia home.

The 1980s-era Okker-Edging home was efficiently designed, but had a small kitchen and separate formal dining room. A solid wall divided both areas from the family room. While it was good to keep the kitchen activities in the kitchen, the design also kept the family apart. "The 4:00 pm -- 6:00 pm time is chaotic," Pat said. "The kids would be in the dining room doing homework; I'd be in the kitchen fixing dinner with a wall between us. Normally that is a great time to find out what is going on in their lives, but the only way I could interact with them was by yelling."

Richard also knew the home had problems. "The kitchen was too small and dark and the appliances were outdated. The access to the backyard was difficult, too. We noticed this when we first moved in, but just lived with it for years. We finally decided to do something about it."
